From Trieste to Monaco, the Via Alpina: a long-distance trek through the beautifully-preserved Alps.
Imagine ... the incredible: a network of fully marked-out hiking trails almost 5,000 kilometres long, running from Trieste (Italy), on the Adriatic coast ... to Monaco, on the Mediterranean! You can choose from five routes (the "blue" and the "red" for the French part), across the eight countries of the Alpine Arc: France, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. In France alone, there are five Departments to cross - Haute-Savoie and Savoie, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Alpes Maritimes - crossing the borders with Switzerland and Italy a dozen times in 16 stages (blue route) or 32 stages (red route)!

Obviously there's no question of doing everything in one go. People come to the Via Alpina ... and then come back again! This is particularly true since people come seeking not only physical effort or sporting feats, but above all encounters, not just with breathtaking lands and landscapes, but also with a common history, a shared culture and way of life. In short: a feeling that they too can share the Alpine identity.
Now it is up to you to organise your trek, the way you want it to be: for a day, a weekend, a week, a month ... or longer!
The Via Alpina spirit means ...
- Immersing yourself in the unique yet contrasting world of the Alps ...
- A way of exploring new lands and their people at walking pace ...
- A concrete link between all the countries in the Alpine chain ...
- A contribution to local development ...
